Choosing Not to Pollute with Plastic

With summer now upon us, the purchase of water always increases. I was alarmed to read the recent findings of possible E-Coli contamination from Niagara Bottling company, a company responsible for bottling several store-brand water bottles.

Aside from the facts that we know about how these plastic bottles affect our environment, it seems like a great idea to find an alternative way to quench our thirst. Did you know that even with recycling efforts, 6 out of 7 plastic bottles consumed in the U.S. are “downcycled”— Which means they are sent for the next millennia somewhere out there,  putting its toxins into our watersheds and soil as well as into our oceans and passing the problem to our future generations?

And then there is that rumor that bottled water really comes directly from the tap!  Really?  NRDC conducted a four-year review of the bottled water industry and the safety standards that govern it, including a comparison of national bottled water rules with national tap water rules, and independent testing of over 1,000 bottles of water. Our conclusion is that there is no assurance that just because water comes out of a bottle it is any cleaner or safer than water from the tap. And in fact, an estimated 25 percent or more of bottled water is really just tap water in a bottle — sometimes further treated, sometimes not.
