The purpose of World Oceans Day…..to inform people of the “impact of human actions on the ocean”, “develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean”, and “mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans”. This year’s theme is ‘The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods’. According to the UN, “this year’s annual event will shed light on the wonder of the ocean and how it is our life source, supporting humanity and every other organism on Earth”

Growing up near the Pacific Ocean (San Diego) my only thoughts about the ocean were the many wonderful visits and memories of just that. I never imagined how important it was to protect it. Now that we are surrounded by the effects of climate change and just how reckless human activities — like garbage disposal, oil leaks, sewage, etc. — have become, and how they have been impacting the oceans, this day seems especially important. Did you know that the oceans are considered the lungs of the planet? That is a scary image when you are shown countless times the impact of how just plastic alone has polluted our oceans.

I am so happy I came across a company so many years ago that helped me begin helping the environment by not using so much plastic, not polluting, and making sure I only used non-toxic household products. This same company actually was chosen by Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau in 1986 to provide environmentally friendly cleaning products to be used on their research vessels Calypso and Alcyone. This quote by Dr. Forest C. Shaklee is an example of the culture of this company: “I woke up to the relationship of man with Nature…determined that we were going to build products that would be in harmony with Nature and not pollute the air, soil, or water.”

We can all do our part……
